The Charlois Fund for Art and the Forest was created in 2018 at the instigation of Sylvain Charlois. Its mission is to develop, promote and showcase the art, culture and heritage associated with the forest, its professions, traditions and values.
The Charlois Fund for Art and the Forest exhibition space, which was purpose-built in Murlin, houses the Fund’s collections (as well as those of the Charlois Group companies), which have grown steadily over the years thanks to a proactive policy of acquiring exceptional works of art spanning four centuries of art and craftsmanship.
There are numerous works of art and testaments to the history of the forests and the professions associated with them just waiting to be discovered in Murlin! In addition to this, the Charlois Fund offers a full and varied cultural programme, made possible due to the design of the space created by interior designer Rapp & Nogen. This space is highly modular, enabling it to adapt to and host all kinds of events (exhibitions, concerts, conferences, workshops, etc.) put on as part of the partnerships we have forged both nationally and locally with key players on our region’s cultural scene, including the ‘Blues en Loire’ festival and the ‘Les Barricades Mystérieuses’ association.
Our tour includes a visit to the La Grange cooperage, where visitors can see the cooper craftsmen at work making some exquisite barrels and appreciate how the cooper’s age-old skills and know-how have been preserved over the centuries
The Charlois Fund for Art and the Forest also provides ongoing support for contemporary art in all its forms, by welcoming artists in residence in a setting conducive to their creativity. The works created during these residencies are then displayed in our exhibition spaces.
Last but not least, the Charlois Fund for Art and the Forest has been involved in a tree-planting programme since its inception as part of its commitment to the preservation and development of forests.
Committed to sustainable forest management, the Charlois Fund for Art and the Forest launched a major tree-planting operation in France in 2019, with a 10-year scheme that incorporates biodiversity and its development, as well as climate change.
The scheme covers not only planting, but also the preparation and maintenance of the forest spaces, while enabling the development of biodiversity. The programme is designed to evolve over time, depending in particular on the changing weather conditions and the needs of the land.
For example, the presence of ponds, dug during the preparation of the plots, is conducive to the development of forest biodiversity. Tree residue (branches, crowns, etc.) is also laid out in a swath (branches and slash) to enrich the soil over the seasons.

Cabinet Frédéric Labbe, established in France’s Nièvre department since 2005, manages more than 26,000 hectares of forest.
Forestry management is one of its experts’ core competencies and is carried out in compliance with forestry and environmental regulations.
Since 1947, Pépinières Naudet has been planting trees for private and public forest owners to meet the need for sustainable forest and regional development.
It is vital that we invest in French forests by stepping up our planting activity to allow us to pass on this asset and our love of the forest to those who come after us.
